Clan Smith Society

Septs: Smith

Motto: LUCEO NON URO

Translation: I SHINE NOT BURN

Crest:

Winged flaming heart: wings represent flee to freedom & burning heart represents a desire to be free of oppression

The Smith name comes from the occupation of blacksmith, metalsmith, bladesmith, goldsmith, and other workers in metal or smiths.

The metalsmith worked with acquired skill to keep the metal from scorching or burning. Rather, his goal was that the fashioned metal should shine - not burn. Thus the motto for all smiths - Luceo non uro: I shine not burn.

Sir William Smith (1884 - 1914) designed the Clan Smith tartan, Coat of Arms, and Clan Badge. William Alexander Smith was the founder of the Boys Brigade, the first uniformed organisation for youth in the world. He was from Thurso, Caithness, Scotland
