Deriving their name from the lands in Lanarkshire where they have lived from 800 years, the lands of Carmichael were originally under the control of Clan Douglas until they were gifted to the family in the late 14th century as a reward for helping the Douglas family in their struggle for power in Scotland.
The present clan chief is Richard Carmichael of Carmichael and the clan seat is at Carmichael in South Lanarkshire.
