Located in the Borders since the 13th century, the Chisholm name is derived from the Norman ‘chese’, ‘to choose’ and the Saxon ‘holm’ meaning ‘meadow’.
Originally hailing from Roxburghshire, it is said that the Clan were rewarded with lands in Inverness-shire after two Chisolm brothers saved the King’s life from a ferocious wild boar. The family would rise to prominence in the north in 1359 when they were given control of Urquhart on the shores of Loch Ness and Erchless castle – the historic clan seat.
The current clan chief is Andrew Francis Hamish Chisholm of that Ilk, thirty-third Chief of Clan Chisholm.
