Dunbar Clan

Tracing their origins back to Celtic history, the Dunbar family received the lands that their clan is named after the marriage of Patrick of Dunbar to Ada, daughter of William the Lion, in 1184.

This royal marriage gave a member of the clan, Patrick Black Beard, Earl of Dunbar, a claim to the crown during the succession crisis triggered following the death of the only heir to King Alexander III, Margaret, Maid of Norway, in 1290.

The family has gone one to establish several branches including the Dunbars of Mochrum (to which the current clan chief belongs).
