Hepburn Clan

The Hepburn name is territorial and comes from the village of Hebburn in Northumberland.

It is believed that the clan came to Scotland by accident as Adam de Hibburne was captured by Scots during a raid across the border but was then freed after an act of bravery when he saved his captor form death following an attack from a wild stallion.

For this act, Hibburne was granted lands in North and South Hailes in East Lothian. The clan would later settle here at Hailes Castle, their historic clan seat.
