The Macdonalds of Sleat are a branch of the Macdonald clan – one of the largest clans in Scotland.
While the main branch of Clan Donald is associated with Domhnall mac Raghnaill – the eponymous progenitor of the clan, the Macdonalds of Sleat are instead descended from Hugh of Sleat, the 6th great-grandson of Somerled, a 12th-century Lord of the Isles.
The Macdonalds of Sleat traditionally held lands on the Outer Hebrides and Skye and controlled castles at Dunscaith, Duntulm and Armadale. They would, however, eventually become associated with Inverness-shire.
Today, the clan have members from all over the world. The current clan chief is Sir Ian Godfrey Bosville Macdonald of Sleat, 17th Baronet of Sleat. He is the 25th chief of Clan Macdonald of Sleat.
