Sharing a common ancestry with the powerful Clan Donald, the Macdougall name was taken from Dougal, son of Somerled – an apparent king of the Isles in the 12th century.
The MacDougall clan are most associated with the lands of Argyll in the Highlands and held seats at Dunollie Castle and Dunstaffnage Castle. The former is still owned by the family but is now in a dangerous condition.
The current clan chief is Morag Morley MacDougall of MacDougall and Dunollie.
