Derived from the Gaelic Mac an t-Saoir meaning “son of the carpenter”, the MacIntyre clan are descended from Maurice Mac Neil a nephew of Somerled, the great 12th century leader of the Scottish Gaels.
The clan are most associated with the district of Argyll and it is here that their traditional clan seat, Glennoe, was located between the mountain Ben Cruachan and the banks of Loch Etive.
The current clan chief of MacIntyre is Donald Russell MacIntyre of Glenoe.
