Mitchell Clan

Believed to have been a sept of the larger Innes and MacMichael clans, the Mitchell name is derived from the French version of the name Michael and the family likely arrived in Scotland during Norman times.

The Mitchell name have changed from a forename to a surname due to its ubiquitous nature and it is likely that the clan are therefore related to the large MacMichael clan as that particular surname can also be traced back to similar origins.

The clan’s connection to the Innes family is even stronger and is strengthened by marriages into the Inneses of Rora. In fact, the connection is so strong that it was confirmed by the Lord Lyon that members of the Mitchell clan are able to wear Innes Tartan.
