The Ramsay clan are believed to have been descended from Symon de Ramesie, a young Norman nobleman who accompanied David of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon to Scotland in 1124.
The clan would eventually go on to settle in the Scottish Lowlands and would become associated with the region, particularly the area of Midlothian. It is here that their traditional clan seat would be located at Dalhousie Castle – where the clan would live from the 12th century until the 20th when they relocated to Brechin in Angus.
The current clan chief of clan Ramsay is James Ramsay, 17th Earl of Dalhousie.
