Believed to have been descended from the hereditary Abbots of Applecross (a peninsula in the north-west of Scotland) the Ross family would, as their name suggests, settle in Ross in the Scottish Highlands.
It is here in Ross that the clan’s historic seat would be located – Balnagown Castle. There has been a castle located on the site of Balnagown since the 14th century and the current building was constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries. It remained under the ownership of the clan until the 20th century.
The current clan chief of Clan Ross is, David Campbell Ross of Ross and Balnagown.
