Taking their name from lands of the same name in Roxburghshire, the Rutherford clan would become known for their fierce defence of lands against the English from south of the border.
The clan would settle in the Scottish Borders, particularly at Jedburgh, and would hold multiple castles in the region over their history including Rutherford Castle, Hunthill Castle and Eggerston Castle.
