Closely related to the Campbells of Argyll, the MacDiarmid name is derived from the Gaelic ‘MacDhiarmaid’, meaning, ‘son of Dermaid’. It is believed this name refers to Dermaid, one of the attendants of Saint Columba and a possible son of a previous King of Scots.
Today, the MacDiarmid name can be found throughout Scotland, with particularly strong representation in Argyll, where they were so closely related to the Campbells.
