Derived from the Gaelic Mac Fhionghuin meaning “fair born” or “fair son”, the MacKinnon clan have been named as one of the Siol Alpin – the 7 clans believed to have been descended from Kenneth MacAlpin (the man commonly believed to have been the first king of a unified Scotland).
The clan would go on to be associated with the Scottish Highlands, particularly the islands of Mull and Skye.
The historic seat of clan MacKinnon was located at Caisteal Maol on the Isle of Skye, a now ruined castle which was last occupied in the 17th century.
Currently, the clan chief of Clan MacKinnon is Madam Anne Gunhild Mackinnon of Mackinnon.
