Believed to have been a name of Norse origin, the Moffat clan are an influential clan from the Scottish Borders who are believed to have given their name to the town of Moffat in Dumfriesshire.
It is Dumfriesshire that the Moffats are most closely associated with and it is from here that they would take part in raids across the English border as part of the group of clans known as the Border Reivers.
Today, the chief of clan Moffat is Jean Moffat of that Ilk.
